Juilliard-trained violinist Leonid Sushansky returns to Guayaquil, Ecuador this July 4th for Concert for America — a landmark performance of the Violin Concerto No. 2 by Florence Price with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Guayaquil under the baton of Maestro Manuel Campos Loor.
The concert marks Sushansky’s second collaboration with the Orquesta Filarmónica de Guayaquil, having first performed with the ensemble two years ago to wide acclaim — presenting the Wieniawski Violin Concerto No. 2 in D Minor, a work that had not been heard in Ecuador for many years. That performance, which included masterclasses for young Ecuadorian musicians, established a partnership rooted in artistic excellence and cultural exchange.
Now Sushansky returns with a work of profound American significance. Florence Price — born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887 — was the first African-American woman to have a symphony performed by a major American orchestra. For decades her music was largely overlooked. Today, in a powerful cultural reclamation, her compositions are being rediscovered and celebrated on the world’s greatest stages. Her Violin Concerto No. 2 is a work of remarkable beauty, lyrical depth, and unmistakable American voice.
To perform it in Ecuador — on July 4th — with an orchestra composed of musicians from Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, and Ukraine — is to ask a question the music itself answers: what does America actually sound like?
Sushansky will also premiere the Florence Price Violin Concerto No. 2 in Virginia in January, for a concert honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday — making this a season of deep artistic and cultural purpose.
